How to Fix a Stuck or Unresponsive Key

Confirm the problem with the keyboard test first, then work through these steps in order: they are listed from fastest and least invasive to most involved, and they solve the large majority of stuck or unresponsive keys without buying anything.

Step 1: confirm which key is actually affected

Open the keyboard test and press the suspect key on its own first. If it lights up normally there, the problem may not be the key itself: check whether it only fails in combination with other keys, in which case see the key rollover and ghosting test instead, since that is a very different (and not actually broken) situation.

Step 2: remove loose debris

This alone fixes the majority of dead or intermittent keys.

  1. Turn the keyboard upside down and gently tap the back a few times, or shake it lightly over a bin, to dislodge crumbs and dust that have settled under the keycaps.
  2. Use a can of compressed air, held at an angle (not straight down) around the affected key, so debris is blown out sideways rather than pushed further in.
  3. Retest the key. If it now works, you are done; if the improvement is only partial, continue to the next step.

Step 3: clean under the keycap

Needed when debris or a small amount of residue sits directly under the switch, not just loose on the surface.

  1. If the keycap lifts off (most mechanical keyboards, and many external membrane keyboards), remove it carefully with a keycap puller, or a flat tool wrapped in cloth to avoid scratching. On laptops, keycap removal is more delicate and model-specific; skip this step on a laptop unless you are comfortable with it, and go to Step 5 instead.
  2. With the keycap off, use a dry cotton swab first to lift visible debris, then a swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (90%+ concentration if available) to clean the switch stem and surrounding area.
  3. Let it air-dry completely (a few minutes is usually enough for isopropyl alcohol) before reseating the keycap.
  4. Retest with the on-screen keyboard test.

Step 4: check for a driver, remap, or OS-level cause

If a key used to work and suddenly stopped, especially if it stopped working the same way in every application, check software before assuming hardware.

Step 5: liquid spills

If liquid caused the problem, the order of operations matters more than speed of cleaning.

  1. Power the device off immediately. If it is a laptop with a removable battery, remove it; if not, unplug it and hold the power button for a few seconds to drain residual charge.
  2. Turn the keyboard or laptop upside down (in roughly the position it was in when the liquid spilled) to let excess liquid drain out rather than run deeper into the electronics.
  3. Let it dry completely before powering on again: 24 to 48 hours is the commonly recommended minimum, longer for a sugary or sticky liquid.
  4. Power on and retest with the on-screen keyboard test. A key that still feels physically sticky after full drying usually needs the keycap removal and cleaning from Step 3, or professional cleaning if it is a laptop.

Step 6: when to replace instead of repair

If a key still does not register after cleaning, and neighboring keys on the same row and column work fine (which rules out a wiring/ghosting explanation), the individual switch has most likely failed mechanically. On a mechanical keyboard, an individual switch can often be desoldered and replaced by anyone comfortable with basic soldering, or by a local repair shop. On a membrane keyboard or most laptops, an individual switch cannot be replaced on its own: the realistic options are a full keyboard replacement (straightforward on many external keyboards, a parts-and-labor job on most laptops) or, for a desktop, simply buying a new external keyboard.
